This is a light quick read on how to write a memoir , and more importantly how to get the courage to write about your life if you’ve never done so before. This book seems geared towards people who aren’t writers, so much of this advice was familiar to me from reading books like “On Writing” by Stephen King and “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert. I would say 80% of the book is psychological writing advice and the 20% is technical. I would’ve liked this book to focus more on the technical.
The Line Edit chapter was probably the most useful chapter for learning in real time how to write a memoir. Everything else felt like fluff or something that could be reduced to 2-3 chapters. I think the advice will be motivating for someone who doesn’t know anything about writing a book but people who identify as writers would be better off with another book . One thing I’d appreciate in the future is if the author consolidated her advice into checklists or templates we writers could apply in our own writing process.
