Postmortem: What Survives the John Wayne Gacy Murders by Courtney Lund O'Neil

5.0

I had heard of John Wayne Gacy but being a child of the 80s, this was before my time and I didn't know details of all that went on. This was not only an education for me on the events but offered a unique perspective in focusing on the true hero of this case...Courtney's mom. This isn't a book meant to focus or sensationalize Gacy but to enlighten the rest of us on the stories of those directly affected to this case (and a reason to consider those affected by other cases).

We not only get to know Courtney's mom, Kim, as the key witness but also as a teen whose entire life was ultimately affected by what she experienced. Yes, there is generational trauma and I feel that in writing this book, in memorializing Kim's story for future generations, Courtney is helping relieve some of that trauma.

This isn't just true crime. It's a coming of age story, a love story, the story of a mother and daughter, a history lesson, a courtroom drama...it's all of this wrapped into one. It will give you pause to wonder what you would do in such a case, how much our justice system has evolved since the 70s and how devastating it is to know that there are still victims who haven't been identified.
