My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

5.0

This is such a compelling read, so that i just finished the entire thing in one sitting without meaning to.

But with the short chapters and the if slightly strange but still interesting writing style and this strange combination of lovable and understandable characters and the strange distance that the pacing of the story keeps between the characters and the readers made me just keep turning the pages.

I think what became clear with this little section is that this is a bit of a strange book.

It is not at all for everyone and i am pretty sure that it is that type of book that the reader either clicks with right away or just does not understand.

Because it is a strange book.
The writing, the characters, the way the plot is structured, how it ends and everything that happens.

Its great, in my option, its really well done and so understandable but at the same time completely crazy!

What i personally really enjoyed is how men are completely inexcusably portrait as the type of guy that way too many are: that are only seeing a pretty face and body and overlooking the rest and seeing what they want with that rest.
They don't care if a woman is the best type of person in everything, if she isn't the prettiest person in the room? Who cares about that one if the pretty one is there?

And sure that might not be true for every single male. But lets be real here, way to many guys are that way.

They see someone beautiful and don't hear and see anything they don't want to until they think they can benefit from listening.

And it was nice to see that portrayed in a book. At least to me it was.

I also had a lot of very interesting love/hate feelings for the sister relationship in this book.
Both clearly have HUGE issues and should be locked away and get a lot of help.
But its so fascinating to see that relationship and see it unfold in the book!
The one sister that feels way to much and has no idea what to do without a lot of people she doesn't want to see being hurt getting hurt, and the other one that only cares for herself and is clearly a psychopath.

I was also positively surprised by the wonderful representation of the OCD in the narrating sister.
It might not be named, or pointed out, but if you can see the signs its way to easy to see them. And i honestly enjoyed that it wasn't called OCD. Why would that matter? She is obsessive with her cleaning, it helps her think and come down and she needs it for herself. Who cares what its called? That is not what the book is about and its just a part of her character.

All in all this is not a thriller or a mystery.
Yes, there is murder, a killer and someone of an investigation in a way.

But i mostly felt that this book was a character study. Its about family relationships, relationships in general, how men and women see each other, what the world sees with specific people and overall its just generally more of a literary fiction read that discusses things instead of trying to solve anything.

So if you are in search of a thriller or even an actual thrill of any kind? Not the book for you!

If you want something fast and interesting and different? Something that has a kick and very interesting characters and a great mixture of different characteristics and story telling? Defiantly give it a try!
