The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
4.0
While I enjoyed the first in this series, [b:The Summoning|2800905|The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1)|Kelley Armstrong|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51tUlMcyolL._SL75_.jpg|2451397] well enough, I remember having issues with the fact it had to spend a lot of time explaining the world of Chloe Saunders, and introducing us to the various characters...and not nearly as much time on plot as I would have liked. Luckily, with the second book in the series, Armstrong has already built things up for the readers and so this had a whole lot more plot and development and was a lot more entertaining for that.
I really was happy with the fact that Chloe is a necromancer. The urban fantasy genre is so bogged down with vampires and werewolves that it honestly gets a bit boring, but someone who can raise zombie minions and see ghosts is a lot more rare. I'm looking forward to how she'll use these powers in the next book, since in this novel she's still trying to understand what she's capable of.
I've been pretty impressed with how real the characters feel, and was happily surprised that I actually got to like Tori this time around. Armstrong does a great job of fleshing out what feels like real teenagers on the run.
This was very fast-paced, and read really quickly. It's definitely a page-turner that had me losing track of time.
