The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

3.0

I'm still not entirely certain how I ended up landing on this one. I'm sure it's some combination of seeing the book cover floating around the book toks, discords, and facebook of the reading communities of the last year, and I must have seen the trailer for the production of it at least once, though I can hardly remember anything about it. Also, it was a winner for the Goodreads Choice Award in 2021, and I usually put all the winners of "want to read." #someday

This isn't my usual genre by any means, but I found myself running along with the main character and her stepdaughter, getting drawn deeper and deeper into the mystery of their suddenly vanished husband and father. I do think it seems to get a little outlandish in the back nine of the mystery, amid the big revelations about what all is truly lurking in the shadows, but I also really loved the relationship that developed between the main characters who never knew these happenstances were coming for them.

The last chapter absolutely got to my heart, though.
(For both reasons.)
