Well, this certainly was a Golden Book.
But first, I have to make my apologies to this book. It took me over 2 months to finish it, and it was a typical example of 'it's not you, it's me'. Life (and a lot of other books) just came in the way and somehow this book got a bit lost. However, as soon as I started to focus on Golden Son I immediately saw I should have done so a lot earlier.
*Another Little Note And Warning*
If you haven't read the first book, Red Rising, but think you might want to do so (and I would really recommend it), you may not want to continue reading because there will be spoilers for the first book. If you want to have an idea what these books are about, why not read my review of Red Rising.
Not following directly on the events of the first book, but rather starting two years later in which Darrow has attended a school not unlike the one from Ender's Game. It is clear from the start that a lot has changed and there isn't a lot of explanation. Together with the fact that it is a completely different kind of book than the first, this made the first 70 or so pages a less fast read than I had anticipated. However, this was the part of the book that allowed me to put the book down (literally).
Where the first book was everyone's (or at least my dream) of a combination of The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson and some elaborate version of capture the flag, Golden Son focusses far more on the politics. Darrow now being in an important place for the rebellion, his life is threatened in more ways than one would think possible.
I enjoyed reading it so much that when the end was nearing I dreaded it, because I know it will be some time before I can read the next book. And then when the end came, I had to take a few minutes to get myself back together. That ending!
It really felt like the author was just wrapping some loose ends up in the final pages, only to end with something that makes the Red Wedding look like a nice, social gathering.
What I really liked about it was that the hints were there throughout the whole book. Darrow thinking that he should do something to not always take him for granted, but obviously waits to long with actually doing something about it.
I can't wait to read the next book. I have to know how it ends!
