A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

4.0

I love that Veronica is a strong independent woman who is unapologetically herself. I didn't know what to expect going into this but it was a good lil mystery. The focus is definitely on the character building more than the plot.

Spoilersummary: Veronica is a scientist/natural historian in regency England (1880s ish) who doesn't care about societal expectations of women. She was an orphan, or so she believed, when she is told she is danger and then the baron who told her is murdered. She and Stoker have to figure out who murdered the baron and why. Lots of moving pieces with the police, her unknown parentage, and Stokers past influencing the plot. In the end she finds out who her parents are, specifically her father, and gets out of danger, for now.

solid 3.5 for me.. I like the characters and the banter, but I can't see how this is a 9 book series
