The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang
5.0
Traumatizing.
In a good way, of course. The same level of brutality in The Poppy War continues on in The Dragon Republic, and the ending of this book just about shattered my heart. (Just like the war ships blew up. Too soon?)
Nezha and Rin have so much chemistry together it’s frustrating. I’m aware romance isn’t the main focus of this story- but a kiss in the middle of all the horrific imagery would be nice! A little treat on the side of blood and gore!
Now the leader of the Cike, Rin is at a loss for where to lead her group next. Betrayed by the Empress, there’s nowhere to go. Until Nezha’s father, the Dragon Warlord, steps in. Vaisra has an offer for her: join him, and help turn the Empire into a Republic.
But as battle after battle is waged, it becomes clear that things aren’t what they seem. With a tenuous alliance with the Hesperians determined to study her, and the Empress’s militia closing in, Rin is going to have to make more and more increasingly difficult choices. Can she call the flames and save the world? Or will she take everyone else down with her?
