I’m not sure what their gender identity was when each of these essays were written, but I see now that CJ Hauser is non-binary. They’re also bisexual—which they mention in the book—and have a tendency to want to fix people in romantic relationships. I found this book to be largely about finding purpose, connection, and home, and Hauser’s narration of it is warm and relatable. It is peppered with humor and wit but also contains emotional, even heartbreaking, moments. There are essays about the X-Files, Katherine Hepburn, and robot first responders. Fellow Kansans will delight Hauser’s words on the Wizard of Oz. I’m starting to think that memoirs in essays are my favorite kind. This was truly a memorable and thought-provoking read.
