I found this book through tiktok and was really intrigued - fantasy + romance, bodyguard trope, second chance romance, found family, it all sounded like my cup of tea! Unfortunately I felt like the execution fell a bit flat. The magic system and story itself had a lot of potential but probably should’ve been developed further. Editing would’ve done this book a lot of good, I almost DNF:ed it due to dense and quite frankly boring writing. But this was a debut novel so hopefully Haddon uses this as a learning experience and writes something better next time because as I said, there were lots of potential with this one.
