Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
5.0
'Be prepared for the worst, my love, for it lives next door to the best'
Year ago Lumatere was attacked, the king and queen and their children were killed. A curse was put on the kingdom and those outside the kingdom could not enter. Finnikin is summoned to meet Evanjalin. She claims that she walks in sleep and the heir to the throne, Prince Balthazar, is alive.
If you are a fan of high fantasy novels, then this is a book you need to read. Melina Marchetta is an excellent writer and she created such a brilliant world full of politics, intrigue, mystery and hope. Finnikin of the Rock was a fast paced book which captured my attention from the very beginning and didn't let it go until the last page.
The characters were fantastically written with some great character development. Evanjalin was a favourite. She was very brave and smart, yet she had a vulnerability to her which I really loved to see. I guessed the plot twist at the end but I still really did love it. Finnikin was a character you have to grow to love. At first I found him angry and arrogant but Evanjalin did rub off on him and he started to hope and I did grow to love him. There were so much depth to all the other characters as well, despite them just being minor character, which I loved.
Overall, this is a fantastic novel which I would highly suggest you pick up.
