The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff

4.0

A darkly humorous and incisive criticism of India's patriarchal culture and caste system. Protagonist Geeta is rumored to have offed her husband and, when her microloan group turns to her for help to do the same, she is drawn into a murderous conspiracy to maintain her independence. Geeta could be a hard character to like - prickly, submissive, and not the greatest friend - but both she and all the characters grew past their initial impressions through the story. Geeta also gets a sweet romance with the local moonshine dealer and an adorable animal sidekick so this novel really ticked a lot of boxes, including vengeance against shitty men and a relatively happy ending.
