Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
5.0
I am still crying. Might need to review this one later.
Ok. I have composed myself. I have been really frustrated with almost every book I've picked up in the last 12 months, my "currently reading" shelf is basically a wasteland of things that I got bored with. This is different. I needed this SO MUCH. I was so engrossed this morning I kept reading as I walked in to work this morning. It's been YEARS since I felt like this about a book. And now I'm crying again. Shit. This is a first class horror story, it's all sunshine and childhood nostalgia, friendly squabbles and matter of fact anecdotes, sex and love and school yard politics, but it is also sinister and brutal and describes a world I never, ever want to be a part of. Ishiguro holds a mirror up to our humanity and asks us, how far could we go, would we push it that far, if given the chance? What, exactly, is the value of a soul? I am shattered. Baby, never let me go. Please.
