I just found the pace very slow - I had such high hopes for this book, because it seemed on the face everything I enjoyed about the dystopia and horror genre, but it took those things in a direction I was not interested in. Melanie was the best character, the best written and her relationship with the adults around her was a good focal point to the story, but without any of the other children being involved past the first chapter, it seemed to fall flat and her self-restraint didn't have any meaning to it aside from being scared.
