Tales from Firozsha Baag by Rohinton Mistry

4.0

In second-year Canadian Literature class at university we read "Swimming Lessons" - the last story from the collection Tales from Firozsha Baag, about a Parsi immigrant from Mumbai (then Bombay) adjusting to life in Toronto in the 1980s. Experiencing that story again in the context of the full short story collection was so much richer and more poignant. The protagonist, Kersi, is one of many residents of the predominantly-Parsi apartment complex Firozsha Baag, whose daily lives are explored in interwoven stories. Rohinton Mistry finds what's remarkable about seemingly mundane activities in the residents' lives, from stamp collecting to playground games. A few of the individual stories didn't quite hold my attention but it's the cumulative effect that's powerful.
