My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

5.0

Wow! This is such a fascinating and well written book. Vanessa is 32 and also leading a chaotic, depressing life in Portland, Maine at the time that the #metoo movement is gaining momentum. Vanessa started having a sexual relationship with a male teacher when she was 15 (and continued to until she was in her twenties) but has never considered herself as a victim of abuse or rape. The book is told in alternating ‘then and now’ chapters and is so gripping right from the start. It goes very deeply into Vanessa’s state of mind, her thoughts and feelings about her own experience and those of others who are now claiming to have been abused by the same teacher. I highly admired the author for being brave enough to write about a character like Vanessa. This book will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about grooming, sexual abuse and those who survive it. Essential reading for anyone who wants to better understand this topic.
