“Please don’t make me click your link, you self-serving motherfu—“
Ligotti has been one of my favorite horror authors for years and this book, his first attempt at non-fiction, might be his most terrifying work. A work of philosophy, Ligotti explores the concept of consciousness, and subsequently humanity, as the root of all dread, arguing that our ultimate meaninglessness lurks just beyond our vision like so many ghouls and demons. He uses this then to explore just what horror is and how it works. The bleakness of his worldview is laid bare for all to see, and it’s ultimately terrifying because, well, what if he’s right? Anyone interested in either philosophical discourse or horror would do well to read this, and it’s fantastic that Penguin has given this such an amazing rerelease.
