This was advertised to me as a series that is similar to the Dresden Files. While I do agree to this statement in some parts (mainly the humor especially like the ridiculous inworld supernatural situations the characters got put in and the book not taking itself to serious when it needs to do so) it also felt quite different to me, mainly in pacing and tone.

Dresden certainly leans more into the "noir / detective" type of story and this feels more like a classic police / crime story with of course supernatural elements. While there where some gory and dark scenes I felt like the tone was a good bit lighter than the average Dresden book. Dresden books are also usually pretty fast paced as Harry continues to stumble from bad into worse situations and Rivers of London on the other hand felt like a considerably slower burn.

That being said I really liked our main character as he seems like a really sympathic guy and his stumbles into the supernatural world are really fun to explore which is important because we are reading a first person POV book. Most of the side characters that got set up up also felt pretty interesting and I want to find out more.

I was not a fan of the general Mystery and plot of this book. It was okay but nothing special. But it also  didn't need to be since this was a quick and easy read in general.
