This is a layered novel, a combination of historical literary fiction and thriller. While at times it seemed too long, the desire to know what happens to the protagonist, Robert, kept pulling me through. And it picks up speed as you get into the final quarter of the book. Parts of this are hard to read, but it never felt gratuitous, just sickeningly realistic.
