A Kind of Paradise by Amy Rebecca Tan
4.0
A beautifully told tale of a young girl, Jamie Bunn, who has an... let's say incident at school. Everyone at school ridicules her for what happened, and because of what she did, she has to spend almost the entire summer working at the library. She begins this punishment very angrily - she should be having fun, hanging out with her friends (er... friend), taking a vacation, and just doing what a 13-year-old such as herself would do when school got out! But as she encounters new people, like a dog named Shady, an old man who visits the library every Tuesday to return and check out some new 'flicks,' a very tall man who paints and loves to bake and many more individual souls that make her think again - is the library really that bad of a place? Or is it just what Jamie needs? This character arc (reluctant person who doesn't really think themselves to deserve the punishment turns into someone who loves the library). Oh, and you can't forget another very important aspect of the story, and that is, Jamie and her newfound friends have to save the library from being closed down forever. This book made me laugh and shed tears (both internally, though) and is a recommended read for any book lovers, librarians, or library lovers. A love letter to libraries and those who appreciate them everywhere and a heartwarming tale.
