Was real sceptical about reading this because me and YA normally don’t go together but wow… one thing about Akwaeke is that they will tackle a serious discussion from the most unique of angles.

This book explores the many downsides of raising heavily sheltered children, and how this can often be more detrimental than helpful. Although it’s labelled as a fantasy, I think it’s more accurate to say that Akwaeke uses magical realism to explore themes as heavy as child abuse, as relatable as adults not taking children seriously or assuming that they naturally know more than them. This is such a short read (literally head it in one single sitting) but my GOD it was impactful. I’m literally going to go and read Bitter right now.
