Lucy Undying by Kiersten White
3.0
Lucy Undying was such a letdown. I came here for vampires and killing Dracula, not a Multilevel Marketing Scheme. Yes, you heard that right, there’s vampires AND an MLM in this story.
Honestly, I wish it had just been Lucy’s chapters. I thoroughly enjoyed her diary entries and her recounting her undead life to her therapist through recordings, a la interview with the vampire. There’s just something about stories with an immortal being seeing the rise and fall of people and places, the highs and lows of civilization. Her experiences during both world wars were lovely to read.
Unfortunately for me, we had our second protagonist, Iris, who is escaping her mother’s pyramid scheme/cult. A setup that would interest me, if it didn’t feel so out of place in a Dracula retelling of all things. I just didn’t care for Iris as much when Lucy’s chapters were right there.
However, I do have a soft spot for stories about scorned women reclaiming their power, so although this release didn’t meet my expectations, there is that.
