The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

5.0

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead is a heart-wrenching story about a slave woman named Cora. Cora is a slave on the Randall plantation. She has no family left since her mother ran away years before. She is not only viewed as an object but she is even ostracized by the other slaves around her. Until one day, another slave named Caesar asks Cora to escape with him. They then travel to other states by taking the Underground Railroad. In this book, the Underground is not a series of routes and safe houses but an actual railroad. During Cora's desperate flee to safety she discovers the dangers that await her even off the plantation.

This book was such an emotional, thought provoking read. This was such a raw take of the horrors of slavery. I recommend that everyone read this book. This is an awful part of our history that we can't forget.
