What happened to this series after book 2!?

The biggest thing I can't get over is the fact that Alanna has had romantic sexual encounters with two men that are YEARS older than her and treat her like a bratty child (which she is most of the time). One of them is a man that was edging on 40 who was like a sensei to her and called her "kitten" until he was blue in the face
