American Street by Ibi Zoboi

4.0

On the corner of American Street and Joy Road, Fabiola Toussaint thought she would finally find une belle vie—a good life.

But after they leave Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Fabiola’s mother is detained by U.S. immigration, leaving Fabiola to navigate her loud American cousins, Chantal, Donna, and Princess; the grittiness of Detroit’s west side; a new school; and a surprising romance, all on her own.

Just as she finds her footing in this strange new world, a dangerous proposition presents itself, and Fabiola soon realizes that freedom comes at a cost. Trapped at the crossroads of an impossible choice, will she pay the price for the American dream?

This was a wonderfully written debut novel of coming of age story, that truly had me invested in the story of Fabiola's life.
She came to America in Hope of the American of dream, and is faced with choices that NO 16yr should have to face.
Ibi Zioboi really writes in a way that you feel what Fab feels and sees. The choices she makes you feel like OMG this is gonna life changing, you either look forward to them, or dread them for her.
It's a beautiful story written in own voice, and I can't wait to read more from Ibi Zioboi!
