Tomie by Junji Ito

hmm. had to sit on this one for a while, and i still don't know how i feel. i think i need to reread but i don't think this is ito's best work. a lot of the earlier stories are quite weak both art and writing wise. i was pretty surprised because i know how many people like tomie. i think my favorite stories were hair and moromi. ito's usage of body horror in the later volumes is quite good, esp in those two.

ultimately, i think i was struggling to understand the point of some of the stories. the way you view them boils down to how you view tomie. is she an avenging angel? a depiction of how lust consumes? a criticism of beauty? does it change? i'm not quite sure. perhaps it's my fault for trying to view this one through a feminist lens, but that's a habit for me
