Beloved by Toni Morrison
4.0
a gothic classic about a woman who escapes slavery, and finds herself haunted by the ghost of her dead baby.
i've been wanting to read this novel for a while, i'm so glad i got to it this year. a brutal story that successfully manages to capture the multifaceted horrors of slavery. 'beloved' is about motherhood, collective tragedy, personal and shared loss, alienation of bodies (especially female bodies after abuse), the deprivation of homes, and a history that must be remembered & redeemed. absolutely suggest picking this up, hate that it's taken me so long to get to it.
