The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi
challenging

5.0
Vivek Oji is dead - as his mum desperately searches for an explanation, the lead up to his death slowly unfolds.
Obviously we know the outcome of Vivek Oji’s story right from the start, but that doesn’t detract from the story. I enjoyed the unfolding of Vivek’s story - it mirrored Vivek’s own uncovering of layers of identity - though it is terribly bittersweet knowing that it ends in premature death. There are some challenging aspects of the story (specifically around one of the relationships), though I found them more thought-provoking than horrifying. I enjoyed the development of Vivek’s friendships - this book celebrates the pleasure of finding those friends with whom you can absolutely be yourself, who love and understand you. A heart-breaking story of identity, love and friendship, overhung by the danger of being anything other than hetero and cis-gender in Nigeria.
