A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell

5.0

This book talks about two mothers whose kids go to the same school. The two start a friendship until one of the two, Emily, disappear but it doesn’t make any sense. Her life was perfect, with the perfect husband and life. The friends, Stephanie, tries to solve the mystery but the more she discovers the more scary it all become.
This book was simply incredible.
The book is structured with different points of view, mainly Emily, Stephanie and Sean, the husband of Emily. This, most of the time, bothers me because, most of the time, can be useless: here it was simply the right writing choice. With the different views, we are able to know better each character and not just thought the eyes of others.
The plot isn't obvious because is not just a mystery novel because it goes way beyond that: it's a story of love, sex, money, betrayal and lust (I have to give a trigger warning for the theme of incest). During the story, the reader not only finds what happened to Emily but also follow Stephanie and Sean new relationship. I have to give a trigger warning for the theme of incest.
The characters are very well constructed, all different from each others and with their own story to share. Stephanie is a typical Captain Mom (to cite Sean), very anxious and preoccupied but also very lusty. Emily is a perfect mom, woman and worker with a perfect family and job while Sean seems perfect as well, even if he's also distant from the family. Every one of them has too many secrets that will be revealed throughout the novel with very logical and wit solutions.
The writing style is addicting because I couldn’t stop reading this absurd story. The finale, and most of the last part, in very interesting and challenging for the reader: what's going on? What is going to happen? what about this?
It's a perfect mystery with many plot twists.
Highly recommended.
