American Rapture by CJ Leede

3.75

Sophie is a sheltered teenage girl raised by religious fanatic parents who sent her twin brother to reform school for being gay. When a newly mutated virus hits the Midwest and transforms people into lust-crazed zombies, Sophie finds herself terrified, alone, and begins the search for her brother. Sophie meets several people along the way, experiences the unfamiliar, and forms a small found family—all while trying to survive. American Rapture is a deeply unsettling post-apocalyptic horror novel that provides a fresh take on an overused trope. What really stood out for me was Sophie’s internal struggle as she grappled with her religious trauma and feminine shame. Please check the content warnings if you want to read this as it is heavy on SA and there is a brutal scene with the death of an animal.
