The Deep by Rivers Solomon

5.0

It has taken me about a year to get through this book and I'm so happy that I finally have. Despite this story being completely in my field of interest in every way, I just found myself unable to properly focus whenever I would try to read it. Deciding to listen to the audiobook was the best decision I made and I found that it brought the story to life in a way that just reading it would not have done for me.

There were so many things I loved. The language and descriptions were so achingly beautiful and harrowing at the same time and it made for a lot of conflicting feelings that were very interesting to experience. One of my favourite aspects of the book was the fact that in some chapters we would be hearing the story from the perspective of past historians.  The change in narrator was abrupt and without warning, so any time it would happen I'd be very confused and it would take a couple moments for me to fully comprehend that the whole new story I'd be listening to was a memory. It honestly put into perspective what Yetu probably experienced when she would all of a sudden be stuck in a remembering and it made me appreciate it a lot more.
