Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

5.0

I'm not one to read books when everyone else is raving about them. I do my own thing in my own time and always have. I finally got around to this book and I have to say that it lives up to what so many have said about it.

I had to read it in spurts because so much of what I felt, of what my parents' felt, of what every black person must feel that cannot be put into words, Ta-Nehisi finally put down on paper. He helped me see clearly what I feared as a young adult that wouldn't let me live freely like my white counterparts did. He put into words that thing inside that I feel now that my children are entering young adulthood and venturing out on their own. The pride, the excitement, the fear, and the anxiety. Something White people just don't understand and probably never will.

My heart is so full from reading this book and yet also heavy.

This book is a must-read for everyone, most especially for those who, in the words of Mr. Coates himself, "think they are white."
