Uprooted is a mysterious and tense retelling of beauty and the beast, though it felt like much more of its own story than "retelling" gives it credit for (and I love retellings). You follow Agnieszka as she is taken by "the Dragon" and then learns how to wield her own magic and face a danger that's been haunting her kingdom for hundreds of years. The build is incredible, and the payoff is the perfect quiet at the end of a storm. I think if you go into this only looking for romance, you may be disappointed, but if you go in looking for a new fairy tale, this didn't disappoint.

Also, I think this book tricked me into reading about zombies. And that turned out to be great.
