It's always a pleasure to find a comic creator who's really mastered the art of the short story. Deep Breaths shows Chris Gooch to be an exceptionally talented storyteller and artist, able to wield a range of drawing tools, create impact with colour, and reveal a lot about a character in only a few pages. The stories themselves are mostly about dark/disturbing elements of everyday people and situations. But they're insightful and measured and I felt able to appreciate the book thoughtfully but without becoming drawn into too much existential angst.
