The Jock and the Fat Chick by Nicole Winters

3.0

I have really mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I really liked it and the message it was trying to get across, and on the other I hated it and the way it delivered the message.

Let's be honest. It's been a long time since I've graced the halls of a high school, and I know that boys can be harsh about things. But I just feel like the way that the author portrayed the boys or "jocks" in this book was a bit over the top. Also, I absolutely hated the title of this book. I despise the term "chick" and just felt like the term "fat chick" was so derogatory. I think there could have been some better titles available.

I also had a hard time with Kevin's inner monologue. I've read quite a few books told from the male protagonists point of view and have really enjoyed them. I struggled a bit with this one, and with liking Kevin as a person. I think mainly I was frustrated by the fact that he knows what he is doing is wrong but won't do anything about it!

Now, the things I did enjoy. I loved Claire and all of the cooking references within the story. I loved seeing Kevin grow as a person, and seeing how he realized that life wasn't all about protein bars, and lifting weights at the gym. It was nice to see that growth within his character.

All in all, it wasn't a bad story, just not one that I enjoyed immensely. The writing was really good though, and the story flowed so I'm giving it three stars.
