Cthulhu vs. Kaiju by Mitchell Lüthi

3.5

The story's premise promised that the author had "penned a love letter to both cosmic horror and kaiju with a single stroke of his pen" but I had my doubts going in.

However, this story absolutely acknowledges the dread and chaos that accompany Cthulhu's rising. There's a touch of madness and a whole lot of unease. The audiobook's sound effects were magnificent and really amplified the tension.

I do, nevertheless, believe that there were some missed opportunities. The kaiju have a "hive mind" that is controlled by an unknown entity. I was surprised that this entity wasn't revealed to be Cthulhu himself. I imagined that the ending would involve Cthulhu and his horde of kaiju marching toward human civilisation, so I was pretty disappointed with the ending we received.
