I do not regret reading this book and I generally recommend it but I've got beef with it for sure. 
I think it's pretty fucking pompous and sure that's academia or whatever but as someone in academia, I would deck any of my co-workers if they were even half as uppity as this book was. I also think there's simultaneously too much information and not enough info about how the magic system works in this world. I understand that this book is intended to be part of a series but it feels very incomplete.
