My anticipation for childrens books is typically pretty low, mostly because I’m in my late 20’s and I’m a big boy now, but also because so many writers and even critics, set the bar so low.
That changed a few months ago when I found out that one of my favorite African leaders had written a childrens book-that featured African children!
Before I read the book to my kids, I skimmed it myself first (as I do for most of the media they consume).
Sulwe is 48 pages of BRILLIANCE and THANK GOD FINALLY COLORISM IS ADDRESSED on a mainstream, intellectually written, child consumable pallet!
This is a book that will make any adult with an open mind feel their own flaws or the part they play in a part of life that is simply unavoidable.
Sulwe is a 4.7 in my book and not a true 5.0 only because of what makes it great. Sulwe requires supplemental conversation and for culturally and emotionally intelligent people to help explain what Sulwe goes through. In essence, not every 10 year old who reads Sulwe will understand its true importance-even though they will enjoy it for sure!
Thanks for reading, leave a comment!
