Wow, this book just became an instant favorite! I got completely sucked into Addie LaRue’s invisible life.
Adeline “Addie” LaRue — the girl who is marked with a seven freckle constellation on her face. Who sold her soul for the small price of being forgotten by everyone she meets. Who can never leave her mark on the word.
1714: Addie is twenty-three, living in France, when her parents decide she’s old enough to wed. Except Addie is suffocated by the thought of a loveless marriage. On the eve of her wedding, she prays and prays and prays until darkness surrounds her. When Night himself appears as a mysterious God, she desperately exchanges her soul to live forever. Only it’s too late to realize that no one - except for Darkness - will remember her for as long as she exists.
2014: Addie is three hundred years old and has adjusted to her invisible life. She does what she wants and goes where she pleases, but she is never able to build attachments to people, places, or possessions. Yet, Addie plants ideas in the people she meets along the way. It’s a bittersweet life, one that she can end by surrendering her soul to Darkness whenever he resurfaces. Stubbornly she persists.
When she steals a book from an NYC bookshop, she doesn’t expect the boy who works there to remember her the next day. Except he does remember. And suddenly everything changes.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a beautiful novel. It’s historical fiction, fantasy, and romance all wrapped up in one. It was brilliant.
