3.0

There is something about Scandinavian crime fiction that just feels so different than other books. It feels darker (maybe it's the weather or the descriptions of the tiny island) and just sets the perfect scene for murder mysteries. This book is part of a series, which I did not realize at first, and I know that many reviewers recommend starting at the beginning. I will say that as a "new" reader I was able to understand Jessica and her personality, mental health issues, and past thanks to the wonderful writing of the author. This is not a quick read, there is a lot to take in and a lot that you need to really decipher that is more written between the lines

For me, I don't personally love short choppy chapters that jump around a lot, which I totally understand is a stylistic choice and can be hit or miss depending on preference. I felt like I just didn't feel much for any of the new characters involved (loved Jessica) and maybe that's just the ending just didn't floor me.

I loved the audiobook reading of this book and it added so much to the creepy atmosphere! However I did need to pause a bit to really figure out my thoughts about what was going on, which the physical book helped with.

Thanks to the publisher for the free book!
