I was lucky enough to get a copy of Vincent Meis’ new book Colton’s Terrible Wonderful Year before its release. Thanks to @bibliophile.nat (Instagram) for the ARC.
Colton is a 14-year-old Black boy living with his two dads, none of whom is Black. Wanting to understand more about the Black experience in the US, he requests to meet his surrogate mother who has not been in his life since his birth. Falling out with his friends and a trip to Thailand will kickstart Colton’s journey to self-discovery.
The book tackles long-distance relationships, navigating the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. I like a bit more complex writing but since it’s YA, a more straightforward style means the book is accessible to teenagers who are around Colton’s age. This was a pretty quick read though the ending seemed a bit abrupt. I think I’ve outgrown the age demographic but overall I really enjoyed my reading.
Thanks again to Nat for the ARC, you can read about Colton and his adventures on March 4th!
