Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity by Steve Silberman
5.0
This book has been one of the most important books I've ever read.
Though an Autistic, I've never been exposed to the history of autism or society's abhorrent treatment of autistic people; from cruel institutions, to educational segregation, to the current scientifically illiterate blame on vaccines which lead parents to discredit sound medical procedures that would leave their child in great pain, as long as they don't have to "put up with a freak".
The book also goes into great detail about the criminally overlooked autistic adults that helped change the world through their achievements in science fiction, engineering, organizing autism advocacy groups and more, even going in to detail about the development of the movie "Rain Man" and its hand in creating more autistic representation in films and tv (even pointing out the obscure Mickey Rooney film, "Bill", based on a true story).
Someday, I want that this book becomes a television series as well made as the two "Cosmos" miniseries that will enlighten countless numbers of people as much as this book has with me.
