This one didn’t take long! MILKFED is a cringey, embarrassing, erotic, and disturbing tale of learning to love yourself.
Though Milkfed is a humble 288 pages, Broder masterfully weaves together an intricate story of disordered eating, body dysmorphia, narcissistic parents, bisexuality, coming out, religion, and self-acceptance. It’s fast-paced with chapters averaging 2-3 pages. She makes every word count.
I especially enjoyed Broder’s take on the influence of religion on the self. The protagonist is a lapsed Reform Jew who falls for a practicing Orthodox Jew. Each woman has a very distinct relationship with Judaism and God that heavily influences their decision making.
I’m ready to go read everything else this woman has written! Thanks @marcella for the recommendation.
