Howling Dark by Christopher Ruocchio
3.0
3.5 Stars.
Why not 4? First off, it's about 40% longer than it should be. There's an awful lot of ruminating and hand-wringing for the amount of story progression in the second book of a 7 book series. Secondly, I am barely invested in the main character, and not at all in any of the others. Character development really struggles. The prose is long winded and overly dramatic.
Why not 3? The worlds, ships, technology, villains - all interesting. There are moments of poignant philosophy. The author is clearly telling a large story that has been all planned out and I do enjoy the attention to detail and foreshadowing.
