Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

5.0

This is dark but some of the most fascinating stories often are. We've seen these subjects before - poverty, addiction, intergenerational trauma, child abuse and neglect but Stuart's interpretation, the way he shapes these elements is excruciatingly tender and complex. Love is brutal yet it endures. Behind every word and line, we're reading a love story. Brilliantly written. (Don't read the acknowledgement until the end).
