Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

emotional informative inspiring medium-paced

3.5

"Maybe You Should Talk to Someone" explores the world of therapy from the perspective of therapist Lori Gottlieb. The author has had an interesting career path, starting in the TV industry, then attending medical school, becoming a journalist, and finally transitioning into therapy while continuing to write.

The book is a combination of memoir and case studies, and it is well-written and engaging.
While the stories about the author's patients are intriguing, it is disconcerting that Gottlieb discloses these personal details after emphasizing throughout the book the importance of absolute confidentiality between a therapist and their patients. Although details have been altered and permissions obtained, it raises doubts about how much trust can be placed in the stories or even the author.

The account of the author's own story and her relationship with her therapist is compelling and does not raise the same concerns as the stories about Gottlieb's patients. The asides about how therapy works and general psychology are interesting, although some of them seem clichéd.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and would recommend it in general, though not strongly.
