The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne

5.0

A purist would object to how the illustrations help cut corners, but my one drawback isn't that it is Tristram Shandy Lite but that the rambling, parodic original is the only key to this rambling, parodic adaptation.
I love the Sterne volumes (though they take a real leap of faith to continue, especially through the cod-scholarship, sometimes), but this riot of interpretation, modernisation and something close to re-enactment is hilarious, enlightening, and genuinely adds something. I stopped reading it in bed because it made me laugh so much.
