The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

4.0

Locke Lamora is a Gentleman Bastard, a member of the thirteenth order. Known anonymously as "The Thorn of Cammor", Locke has pulled off daring heists and avoided death. As the leader of the Gentleman Bastards, Locke has a band of misfit orphans who follow in his footsteps, and are truly devious in fooling the thieving world's ruler. But when a new player gets put on the board and is killing thieves from rival gangs left and right, Locke gets caught up in a tangled mess of deceit, lies, and quick changes. Can he survive to beat this new foe, or will he die trying?

I listened to this one on audiobook. I have been in a kind of audio slump, so it took me way too long to get through this one even though I was thoroughly enjoying it. If anyone has read Six of Crows, this is like the grown up version of that, even though the characters are roughly the same ages. I am always a sucker for a group of misfit friends who are part of elaborate schemes and trickery, so this was really fun to read. The only thing I personally have a hard time with while listening to audiobooks is the time jumps, and this book had A LOT of them. I totally understand the necessity of the time jumps, since it had to do with the present storyline, but for some reason I can handle those a lot more reading a book physically than just by listening to it.

The characters were all developed to the point they served their purpose which I really liked. I also liked that there were unexpected things that happened (even if one of them made me want to stop listening to the book altogether because I was mad) and that the world building felt natural. I think this was a really well done introduction to the series, enough happened that it didn't feel like some first books in series that take a long time to get going because they're trying to cram information down your throat.

Since this took me so long to get through, I don't want to do a long review, mainly because I'm sure there are things I have forgotten, but my overall enjoyment is enough I think. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and isn't looking for an extremely complex story. It was a fun ride, and I will be looking to get into the rest of the series at a later date.
