This book was beautiful. An ode to the bonds of queer love for a person and for a country, and the calamity of fighting for each in a time and place where neither was easy, or often possible. My only knock against it is that O’Neill was pastiching James Joyce in the prose, and I wish he had found a better middle ground between modern sensibilities and the style he was emulating, as sometimes it made for a hard read.
