The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

5.0

I've seen the show of the same name and I've seen the widely disliked The Haunting, and yeah, reading this book at last, I can absolutely see why it's been so widely disliked. I don't think I've ever read a story so tragic and heartbreaking and gorgeous. Eleanor's loneliness goes all the way to the bone, and it hurts terribly to read it. I've never related to a character so much! Which is a little worrying, considering how the story goes, but still. And what a lovely story it is! So atmospheric, too! And also very gay. There is no way to read this story that won't lead to the conclusion that Eleanor is in love with Theodora.
